Decorating from scratch can be a strenuous process because it involves creativity, there are plenty of options, and there is no set of guidelines. To ease your decorating woes and help you waltz through the process, we have compiled a list of four golden commandments top interior designers follow to create a Pinterest-worthy space.

1. Thou Shalt Use the Painted Box Rule

The look of paint changes in accordance with the light falling on it. So before you get your walls painted in a particular color do the painted box test. Paint the inside of a large box with the color of your choice and shine light on the inside to see how the color looks when light falls on it. Choose the color that goes best with the intensity of light in your space.

2. Thou Shalt Use the 70-20-10 Rule

For a balanced scheme, keep 70% of the elements (say, walls and floors) as one color, then add 20% in another color (fabrics such as that of upholstery, curtains and rugs), and 10% in an accent color (cushions, décor objects etc.)

3. Thou Shalt Use the Pattern Rule

When mixing patterns, combine large with medium or medium with small, never large with small. Pick prints that share at least one color in common.

4. Thou Shalt Use the Wow Factor Rule

Always add a wow inspiring focal point in a room - whether it’s a painting, a statement lighting fixture, a mirror or an irregular shaped piece of furniture. Anything that instantly catches the eye, works.
